The basketball tradition at Duncanville High School is rich and deep.  Championship banners line the gymnasium, although you wouldn’t need to dig very deep just to see how good their basketball program is.  In a recent game between Duncanville and Grand Prairie’s girls’ teams, the Panthers destroyed the Gophers by a final score of 91-1.

Duncanville Head Coach Cathy Self-Morgan told WFAA there was not much else she could tell the defending 6A champs to slow down the pace of the game.  “Last night was a no-win situation,” she said.  “There was no gain for us in that game.  I don’t know what else we could have done. (Grand Prairie) put up a lot of shots, they just didn’t go in.  This group is very hungry, so it’s real hard for them not to be the players they are.”

Many people felt appalled by Duncanville, condemning them for their actions by running up the score.  However, several of the players said that was not their intention at all, and felt horrible at the result of the game.  Senior guard Nina Alvarez said, “If you weren’t there, don’t comment on it.  People don’t know that they were really trying.  We were trying to give them the opportunity to play and shoot.  We were not intentionally going after Grand Prairie.”

A statement released by Grand Prairie officials congratulated Duncanville on their win, and noted they were “[looking] forward to competing against them in the future.”

The two schools will meet again later in the season.
